Maitland Gaol is located in the small town of Maitland in the Hunter Region of New South Wales.
In 1848, Maitland Gaol welcomed its first prisoner, since then it kept working until 1996, it was the longest-running and safest prison in New South Wales, with many notorious criminals in Australia. The current Maitland Gaol has become a wish on the New South Wales Historic Heritage List and has been refurbished into a museum open to the public and is considered one of the most complete prisons in New South Wales, including cells, toilets. The awnings and the like still retain the appearance of the place of construction.
Visitors can visit the Maitland Gaol with semi-guided tour, or they can alson join a guided tour. The most exciting thing is to experience the life of the criminals and be "locked" in a small cell for a night, which sounds very exciting. The experience requires a certain amount of courage, because like many Australian prisons, there are rumors of haunting.
