Shrine of Remembrance is located in King's Park (Kings Domain) on the south bank of the Yalá River (Yarra River), the capital of Victoria, next to Jorda Street (St Kilda Road).
Shrine of Remembrance was built to commemorate more than 114,000 Victorian soldiers who participated in the First World War, including 19,000 soldiers who died on the European battlefield. It was officially opened to the public in 1934. This stately building adopts the classical Greek design style. The relief on the front of the memorial is based on the pattern of the goddess of peace in ancient Greek mythology, symbolizing the soldiers fighting for peace. There is a black monument on the ground in the center of the memorial hall. The English word "LOVE" is engraved on it, and various flowers are placed around it. Every visitor who enters the museum will look down at the stone tablet silently, remembering the soldiers who gave their lives for peace. Around the hall stood 16 black marble pillars symbolizing the sentry in the war, the hall patio in the four sides of the art of relief, respectively, the scene of the army battle. At the promenade around the memorial, there are 42 fine bronze boxes, each containing the names and deeds of soldiers who took part in the first world war. Since the opening of the memorial in 1934, the 42 lists have been opened by veterans at 8 a.m. to be remembered by future generations.
In the square outside the memorial, there is a sacred altar, which was lit by Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1956. For decades, no matter how great the city has changed, whether it is spring, summer, autumn or winter, pile of flame is always silently burning, she symbolizes the soul of the soldiers who died for peace forever.
Celebrations are now held every year on ANZ Day (Anzac Day)(25 April) and on Truce Day (11 November).
