Flinders & Freycinet Lookout (Flinders Lookout) is located in Whyalla., South Australia's third largest city, in the northeast corner of (Eyre Peninsula) on the Al Peninsula in southern South Australia.
In 1802, Matthew Flinders (Matthew Flinders) became the first European to pass through the nameless coast of South Australia and map it, solving the mystery that had beset people for centuries, determining whether Australia was a mainland or two mainland. Ten months later, in January 1803, Louis Claude Fichina (Louis-Claude de Freycinet)) passed through remote coastal areas and mapped them while on an expedition to Boding (Baudin). He and his team spent the night at sea, after which Whyalla, was attracted to the local scenery.
In September 2001, as part of the 2002 Encounter 2002 project, in recognition of the feats of French explorers, departments built contemporary commemorative statues at scenic spots and renamed the area Flinders & Freycinet Lookout.
From this small view platform at the highest point in downtown Whyalla, you can see the magnificent views of (Spencer Gulf), South Flinders range (Southern Flinders Ranges) in Spencer Bay and Midbak range (Middleback Ranges) in the interior.
