The coastal town Fremantle the southern suburbs of western australia's capital Perth is about 20 kilometers from Perth and has a resident population of about 26000 people. Locals like to call it the Freo, at the swan river (Swan River) inlet of the indian ocean. It is australia's western gateway. It has been Perth's most important port and birthplace for more than 100 years.
Today's Fremantle have become part of the metropolitan Perth (Greater Perth), and although close to the Perth, the ancient and quiet town is at least a light-year away from the busy urban forest. Fremantle still retains its 19th-century look, with huge docks and mechanized wheat-loading equipment. It is also a gathering place for artists. There are many art shops, art shops, independent designer clothing shops and bookstores on the narrow streets. There are many restaurants, bars and coffee shops on the High St and Market St of the two main streets of the town.
