The Australian Government's year of occupation Program (Professional Year), a special course designed by the Australian Government to help international students gain practical work experience during the course, has been in place for many years. The aim is to help students who take part in the year of career training find jobs that are relevant to their major more easily after graduation and receive 5 points of immigration bonus.

International students majoring in computer science, engineering and accounting who have completed a two-year or more degree in Australia, or hold 485 temporary work visas, can apply for a career-year training course within six months of graduation.

Which Australian graduates are suitable for career year courses?

The Australian government has chosen three majors for the year: computer science, engineering and accounting. In other words, international students studying in the above three majors can choose to enter the year of career courses after graduation, in order to facilitate the search for employment internship opportunities. Year of career courses are recognized by three professional associations:

  • The Australian computer Association, (ACS), is responsible for certifying the (ICT) Professional year course;
  • The Australian Society of Engineers, (IEAust), is responsible for career year courses in engineering;
  • The professional year course for the accountancy profession is partnered by the Australian Institute of Certified Accountants (CPA), the Australian Chartered Accountants Association (ICAA) and the Australian National Institute of Accountants (NIA).
  • What kind of content is included in the Australian Professional year course?

    The Australian Professional year course (Professional Year) is a 44-52-week (one-year) internship course (a course with expertise and Australian employment-related knowledge and a 12-week internship for Australian enterprises). It is used to help graduates familiarize themselves with employment-related knowledge and regulations in Australia, as well as basic work knowledge and skills and knowledge of communication and collaboration with colleagues and superiors through practice. At the same time, professional year courses teach job-hunting skills, such as how to organize resumes and how to apply for employment. It is easier for Australian students to emigrate to Australia if they can find a job in Australia.

    Australian Workplace concept: this segment is designed to enable international students to learn about Australian work practices and values, the Australian job market and the Australian culture of working conditions. For example, occupational health and safety, co-worker co-operation, implementation of work plans, employee self-management, employee relationships, and how to solve problems at work.

    Professional practice: at least 44 weeks of training will be arranged to allow students to take the opportunity to develop their skills, which is the most critical part of the course and the only way for students to familiarize themselves with their careers. When students enter this segment, they must first pass a basic interview with Australian companies.

    Professional upgrading: this process will be aimed at the in-depth development of students' knowledge and skills, so that students can learn how to combine the professional knowledge learned in the university classroom into the operation of the workplace, apply professional knowledge flexibly in the work and become a leader in the industry.

    Which Australian schools or universities offer year-of-career courses?

    Year-of-career courses are offered through the Australian Immigration and Citizenship Agency, as well as institutions and educational institutions accredited by the relevant professional certification bodies. This does not mean that graduates who do not belong to the above-mentioned institutions cannot apply for career year courses, which are open to international students from all Australian institutions, as long as student conditions meet the criteria for admission to career years. You can apply successfully.

    Such as La Trobe University Sydney, Monash University, Navi Education Group, University of Queensland, etc.

    The benefits of completing a career year course?

  • After completing the Australian Professional year course, students will receive a certificate to certify that they will receive an additional 5 points plus points when applying for Australian skilled immigrants;
  • To improve employment opportunities, the purpose of career year curriculum design is to help students get work practice related to the major, and get valuable practical experience from it;
  • Obtain the certificate of the year of immigrant occupation, continue to work in the internship enterprise, or obtain the letter of recommendation from the employer of the internship enterprise, which has the advantage of employment;
  • Identify and develop the talent standards required by the Australian industry to lay a solid foundation for students to work in Australia.
  • For the Australian Accounting career Assessment, in addition to the temporary career assessment for 485, IELTS 4 7s are required for an accounting career assessment, both within and outside the country. If you take an accounting career year course you can lower the IELTS requirement and four IELTS 6 will be able to conduct a career assessment.
