Wonthaggi, once a famous coal mining town, State Coal Mine, which operated from 1909 to 1968, produced about 17 million tons of coal mines for Uygur industry and railways and opened to the public in 1997 as an entertainment and educational base. New facilities include the State Coal Mine Visitor Center (State Coal Mine Visitor Centre), Theatre, shops, museums, heritage walkways, historical buildings and barbecue areas.
