Mount Elephant

Hamilton Hwy, Derrinallum VIC 3325, Australia

Introduction of Mount Elephant

Mount Elephant is located in the western suburb of Delinam (Derrinallum), a small inland town in the southern state of Victoria, about 40 kilometers from Camperdown and about 180 kilometers from Melbourne, the capital of Victoria.

The Mount Elephant is about 380m high and is a cone-shaped dormant volcano. Because the surrounding terrain is relatively flat, the tall Mount Elephant can be clearly seen within 60 kilometers of the surrounding area.

The last eruption of Mount Elephant occurred about 5,000 to 20,000 years ago, and has since been dormant. When the early European colonists first came here, they called the mountain the Swagman's Lighthouse).

Mount Elephant was privately owned and used in slag mining, and there are still traces of excavation at the foot of the mountain. In 2000, the Nature Trust and local communities jointly purchased the property right of Mount Elephant in the hope that it could be re-developed to promote local tourism.

At present, unless, Mount Elephant is open to climb every Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 in extreme weather, visitors can climb from (Mount Elephant Visitor Centre), the modern Mount Elephant tourist center at the foot of the mountain, all the way up to the top of the hill, about 2 kilometers one way; Upon reaching the top of the mountain, you can continue to explore along steep mountain paths at the edge of the crater.
