Hermits Cave is located in (Scenic Hill), Heinix Mountain, on the edge of Griffith, a small town in (Riverina region), southeast New South Wales.
Hermits Cave is a cave on a mountain that was once home to Italian immigrant Valerio (Valerio), where he lived for 23 years. Valerio came to Australia at the age of 17, earlier working as a miner in (Broken Hill), Brocenhill, and after leaving Brocenhill, he went to Griffith to find a reclusive place because he was lovelorn. And eventually lived a secluded life in the caves of Mount Heinik, where he built a closed world of his own, including complex dwellings, footpaths, gardens, terraces, shrines, stone inscriptions, and so on, and in the cave he built a closed world of his own, including complex dwellings, footpaths, gardens, terraces, shrines, stele glyph, and so on. During the second World War, as a citizen of an enemy country, Valerio was detained by a number of Griffith residents who reported flickering "lights" in his cave, but investigations revealed that The semaphore was only Valerio's cave lamp. After it was released in 1942, he returned to the cave. After Valerio's illness, residents of Griffith raised some money for him and sent him back to Italy, where Valerio died six months later in 1952.
Hermits Cave is a unique cultural landscape, documenting the hermit's extraordinary memory, interpretation and fusion of natural landscapes and materials, as well as Australia's history during that period, but is now crumbling due to a lack of maintenance.
