Burnie is a small coastal town in northwest tasmania facing the bays strait (Bass Strait), about 140 km from ronseston (Launceston), tasmania's second largest city. Burnie, along with the small town of Wenyed (Wynyard) west of the Burnie, has a permanent population of about 27,000.

Burnie was built in 1827 and is one of the most important towns in northwest tasmania. port Burnie (Burnie Port) is one of the largest ports in tasmania. Burnie Airport is located in Wenyed, about 20 kilometers from downtown Burnie.
