Scanlon Foundation's national survey, which has been conducted for 10 years, covers a wider range of surveys, both online and by telephone. It designs 77 questions, the largest of its kind, and naturally more persuasive.
, Scanlon Foundation released the 2017 Australian Social cohesion Survey report (Mapping Social Cohesion Report for 2017. The report, led by researchers at Monash University, was based on a national survey conducted in June-July 2017, covering social cohesion, population growth, migration, and cultural diversity.
The results of this year's survey show that Australia is still very supportive of immigrants.
Supporters are still in the majority.
Immigration has been one of the hot topics in various social surveys for more than 50 years, but many of them are not systematic and coherent. Only Scanlon Foundation is at the forefront of this, and immigration has been the subject of TOP 5 in the survey for several years.
Overall, support for increased immigration has risen in twists and turns.
In 2017, 37 percent of respondents said Australia had too many immigrants, 40 percent said the current number was appropriate, and 16 percent said one hundred and ninety thousand migrants a year were too few.
Among the opponents, the middle-aged and the elderly, those with low academic qualifications, those with poor economic conditions and a higher proportion of members of the party, while young people under the age of 35, those with a bachelor's degree or above, those born in non-English-speaking countries and members of the Green Party are lower.
Immigration is good for Australia
Although we have seen in the media that "immigrants are robbing their jobs" and demanding "cutting immigration", most Australians have in fact maintained their sense on immigration.
According to the report, the current rate of social support for immigrants in Australia is still high for four reasons:
- Many industries believe that immigrants are not robbing their jobs, but are helping to increase local employment. There is no significant positive correlation between the number of immigrants and unemployment, especially since 2009.
- Australia's strong economy in previous years and then a smooth recovery from the global economic crisis, people have accumulated a favorable attitude towards immigrants. 63% of respondents believe immigrants from various countries make Australia stronger.
- Immigration has not really become the focus of the political debate, though there have been a lot of reforms this year.
- Support for migrants is also, to some extent, a recognition of the government's attitude towards boat people, believing that the government has the ability to manage borders and immigration issues.

For Australia, an immigrant country, cultural diversity is both an indispensable feature and a proud advantage. So up to 85% of respondents thought multiculturalism was good for Australia.
Similar to those who support immigration, young people under 35 years of age, those with a bachelor's degree or above, those with good economic conditions and those born in non-English-speaking countries favor a higher proportion.
Melbourne, as a well-known cultural capital, also has the highest degree of multi-cultural identity.
There is support and opposition, racial discrimination may be regarded as one of the manifestations of non-recognition of multiculturalism. Twenty percent of respondents in the survey said they had been discriminated against because of their skin colour, race or religion.
Muslims are also a topic of concern. In the telephone survey, the proportion of anti-Muslims was about 25%, while in the online survey, the number rose to 41.4%.
Melbourne has the highest percentage of those who support Muslims, 34%, and Brisbane the lowest, 24%.

Many questioned the findings, including the Scanlon Foundation report, which noted that the demographic Institute's survey was misleading in terms of problem setting.
Of course, this isn't to say that the Scanlon Foundation report caters to immigrants, so it's right, and the demographics institute's report is definitely problematic because of the high rate of anti-immigration. Everyone, every group, can't help thinking about their own interests, but even if there are differences, they have the right and opportunity to express themselves.
In Australia, people embrace different cultures, listen to different voices, accept different views, and stick to different choices. This freedom is probably one of the reasons we chose Australia.
