Located in the heart of Albany, a port city on the south coast of Western Australia, Old Gaol Museum is one of Albany's landmark buildings.
The Albany prison, built in 1852, consists of a main hall surrounded by a central courtyard, a guarded dormitory and a cell, surrounded by a 4-meter-high stone wall with broken glass. The prison ceased to operate and was abandoned in the 1930s, until 1996, when it was renovated and converted into a collection of artifacts from the early settlers of Old Gaol Museum and the indigenous peoples of the area, as well as World War I and World War II monuments in the present-day Old Gaol Museum, Museum.
In the Old Gaol Museum, visitors can go back to the mid-19th century, learn about the life of prisoners in the prison at that time, and carefully observe the timber cells used to hold aboriginal criminals in the 1870s, with various engraving patterns in the cells. It is said to be Australia's oldest aboriginal cell art.
In addition, Old Gaol Museum organized night adventures for adventurous brave people, guided by tour guides, to visit the prison in search of the legendary ghost who haunts the prison.
