Port Pirie is a small port town in southern Australia north of (Spencer Gulf) in Spencer Bay, about 220km by car from Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, and about 90km from (Port Augusta), the entrance to (Eyre Peninsula) on the El Peninsula. The resident population is about 15000.
Port Pirie, the second-largest port in South Australia, exports silver, lead, zinc and wheat from the Brocenhill (Broken Hill) mining area. Port Pirie has been inhabited by European colonists since 1845. Port Pirie now has the world's largest lead smelter, run by Nyrstar.
