According to the Saturday Telegraph, only the best and brightest immigrants can enter Australia. The government is scrutinizing 99 different types of visas, and migrants who rely on benefits may face difficulties. Sources close to the Home Office told the newspaper that visas that would easily attract immigrants who last relied on welfare payments would be cancelled.

The average annual salary for foreign workers last fiscal year was A $ one hundred and ten thousand-an increase of A $15,000-and only nearly half of the technical visas were granted. At the peak of the 457 visa program, nearly 70,000 technical visas were approved.

But less than 35,000 people were approved last fiscal year. As part of the government`s plan to reduce population pressure in major cities, immigrant minister Coleman (David Coleman) is also expected to encourage migrants to move to villages and towns.

`We need to pay close attention to how to attract the best and smartest people and fill the gap in township employment, `Coleman said in an interview with the Saturday Telegraph.

"We know that Australia`s immigration needs vary in all areas and should be taken into account in policy."

"if we can improve the system to better match migration patterns with the needs of a particular job or location, we should do so."

Only 7000 foreigners emigrated to Australia last year, compared with one hundred and eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety nine skilled immigrants in Sydney or Melbourne.

Earlier this year, the Daily Telegraph revealed that the Immigration Department was working on new visa rules to prevent immigrants who had promised to settle in rural areas from arriving directly in big cities.
