In March 1888, the baritone Frederick Baker played Mayfester in the famous Cournot opera.

At the end of the opera, Frederick needs to dramatically return to hell with his trophy through an event door on the stage.

He almost died on the spot when he had a heart attack during the scene. Since then, he has never returned to the stage, but opera performers say they saw him bow to the other actors on the stage.
