According to the Daily Telegraph, there are more than 60,000 illegal immigrants in Australia, most of whom are foreign students and tourists. (Department of Home Affairs), Australia's Home Affairs Department, acknowledged that it lacked sufficient authority to review such personnel.

The Home Affairs Department wants landlords and children's day-care centres to check immigrant visas before renting properties or accepting children.
The agency also asked authorities to conduct stricter scrutiny of various aspects of immigration, including opening bank accounts, obtaining driving licences, and applying for WorkCover permits to work on construction sites.
According to an internal government report, temporary visa holders are willing to risk illegal stay in Australia because they can make more money in Australia than when they return home.
The report also shows that some illegal immigrants even have families in Australia, hoping to wait until their children reach the age of 10 and then acquire citizenship.
The Home Affairs Department hopes to further implement the biometric (biometric screening), at the airport to prevent people from using other names to re-enter Australia.
In addition, the agency called on the Australian Inland Revenue Service, (ATO), and the Department of Civil Affairs, (Department of Human Services), to work on better data comparisons to identify illegal workers in the community, as well as stricter penalties for those who employ illegal immigrants.
