Australia`s Federal government announced today that two illegal immigration detention centres in Melbourne and Sydney may be closed because of a drop in the number of asylum-seekers arriving in Australia by boat under the influence of policy.

Two of Australia`s nine high-security immigration detention centres will be closed, according to the Australian news agency, which Mosuisse government said was proof of government`s border protection policy.

Next Monday, the last group of detainees at Melbourne`s (Maribyrnong) detention centre in Marebarnon will be transferred to other centres, after which the detention centre will be closed immediately.

As part of Sydney`s (Villawood) detention centre in Vila Live, Braxland`s (Blaxland) detention centre will be closed by May and its detainees will be transferred to seven other detention centres.

It is reported that a total of 1250 people are currently detained in illegal immigration detention centres in Australia. They are those who arrived in Australia by boat in 2013 or earlier, those whose visas were revoked for moral reasons, or those who overstayed illegally in Australia.

Australian immigrant minister Gao Min (David Coleman) said the policy was "another milestone in the decline of illegal immigration detention networks in Australia".

In a statement, he said Labour`s "disastrous" border policy forced Rudd government and Gillard government to open 17 immigration detention centres.

At present, nearly 1000 people remain in illegal immigration detention centres in (Nauru) and (Manus) offshore processing centres on Nauru and Manus, some of which have remained there since 2013. It is reported that Christmas Island (Christmas Island) detention centre has been closed earlier.

"Australia`s government intercepts these illegal entry ships, freeing [boat people`s] children from detention and shutting down once-overcrowded illegal immigration detention centres," Gao said in a statement.
