The Sydney Morning Herald reported that as the (Scott Morrison) government lobbied for a comprehensive reform of population policy, an authoritative researcher warned of a sharp decline in annual immigration intake. It will put Australia at risk of a long-term shortage of young workers. Future generations will pay a heavy price for cutting immigration.

By 2025, drastic cuts in immigration could deprive as many as 6.8 million workers of jobs and slow economic growth, underscoring the danger of a sharp drop in immigration acceptance.

According to a study by the National University of Australia (ANU) and the University of Melbourne (University of Melbourne), receiving 180000 migrants a year, Australia`s per capita economic output could be 12 percentage points higher by 2053 than it would have been for the plan to be halted.

McDonald (Peter McDonald), emeritus professor of demographics at the National University of Australia and professor at the University of Melbourne, reckons that this growth of 12 percent per capita will outpace the overall growth in (GDP) per capita in Australia over the past decade. McDonald was a member of the federal advisory committee on technical immigration and was appointed a panel to oversee the census in 2016.

At a time when population policy is sparking more and more political controversy, the findings highlight the value of immigration plans. It is reported that in the year to June, Interior Minister Dudon (Peter Dutton) has reduced the number of permanent immigrants received from 184000 to 163000.

Macdonald`s findings confirm that receiving two hundred thousand net immigrants a year will help address the ageing population. By 2051, the proportion of Australians aged 65 and over is expected to reach 25%.

If the door is not open to immigrants, Australia`s population over 65 will rise to nearly 27% by 2051, from 15% today. This will add to the burden on the rest of society, as pension funds and related services are needed for retirees.

Last month, Prime Minister Mosuisse told Fafus Media (Fairfax Media) that he wanted a "sincere" dialogue on population issues and said there was "reason" to impose stricter visa rules to slow the influx of temporary migrants into overcrowded cities.

Mr Mosuisse and his ministers are currently preparing a government integration (a whole-of-government approach) programme for population and migration, which includes measures to encourage migrants to stay in remote areas.

Although the government`s renewed focus on population and immigration has sparked calls for a boycott of temporary migrants, McDonald said it was wrong to say that "all temporary immigrants want to stay forever." for a temporary resident, The cost of staying in Australia is very high ".

In the 12 years to 2016, Australia is reported to have received 1.5 million temporary immigrants of all types, including (international) students, migrant vacationers, skilled workers and tourists.

With about 190000 permanent immigrants in the past, such drastic cuts in recent years could pose a risk to future growth, according to the academic study.

Smith (Dick Smith), a wealthy Australian businessman, called for a reduction in the number of immigrants to 70000 a year, which Macdonald said was not enough to cover humanitarian and family migrants. The key point is that Australians who marry overseas have the right to seek residency for their spouses. Last year, 50, 000 such visas were issued.

This, he added, must be negative for skilled immigrants.
