The Australian Department of Immigration released the latest list of occupations, List of eligible skilled occupations., on April 18, 2017. With 216 jobs removed and more than 40 common jobs affected, applicants who are currently unable to apply for skilled immigrants from Australia need to consider other migration routes.

2017 / 04 / 19 Core changes in Australia's list of skilled occupations:

Career list renaming

Skilled Occupations List (SOL) was replaced by new Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL);

Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List (CSOL) was replaced by new Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL);

Like CSOL containing SOL, the new STSOL has a list of Combined list of eligible skilled occupations that includes all MLTSSL and STSOL careers.

Immigrant occupation change

The biggest change in immigration policy, implemented since April 19, 2017, is the shift in immigration occupations.

  • MLTSSL removed 16 occupations from SOL
  • STSOL removed an extra 200 jobs from CSOL.

Combined, the new career list is a total of 216 fewer jobs, or 1/3 less than the previous list of occupations.

An Analysis of the impact of Australia's 419 Policy

190. The impact was greater: since the new policy was implemented from 19 April 2017, many state guarantee lists had to be modified, even if occupations were not removed from the list of immigrant occupations. Access to state guarantees for the remaining two months of 2016-2017 also declined. 189 was less affected.

Australia is refocusing this year with not only a sharp reduction in the number of jobs it can apply for, but also a step-by-step policy, and a new TSS visa will be introduced in March 2018.

Australian occupation list Literacy

Australia and New Zealand share the ANZSCO occupational classification system, but not all occupations can apply for immigration, so both Australia and New Zealand have the concept of an immigrant occupation list.

The Australian occupation list specifies which occupations can apply for which visas, for example:

  • Careers on MLTSSL can apply for 189489 kinship guarantees and 485graduate visas
  • Jobs on STSOL can apply for 186190489 remote area guarantees, 457 job visas, 407training visas

Generally speaking, STSOL includes MLTSSL by default, and all occupations on the MLTSSL list can apply for 189485, etc., and can also apply for the following 186190, etc., which also determines the type of visa they can apply for.

The change in the list is more affected by the occupation

On April 19, 2017, Australia will replace CSOL, with STSOL, of which 216 occupations have been removed from CSOL (including 200 pure CSOL occupations and 16 SOL occupations-engineers dominated).

Of the 216 occupations that have been deleted, there are nearly 50 job applicants below. In particular, three jobs related to human resources have been deleted, liaison officers, sales representatives, chemical materials, electronics industry, generation, oil and other engineers. Geophysics, hydrology, biology and other scientists, engineering technicians, etc.

The Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL) will also be renamed as the new Short-term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL) and will be updated every six months based on advice from the Department of Employment.

The Australian Department of Immigration updates STSOL every six months, which means that these occupations may appear on the new STSOL and state guarantee lists from time to time. For those who have passed the assessment but cannot continue to apply for the time being, it is up to Canada and Quebec to see if there is a chance.
