National War Memorial

190 North Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000, Australia

Introduction of National War Memorial

National War Memorial is located on the famous North Street (North Terrace) in the capital Adelaide center of South Australia, at the crossroads between North Street and King's Avenue (Kintore Avenue), next to the South Australia State Library (State Library of South Australia).

Founded in 1931, National War Memorial was built to commemorate South Australian soldiers who died for their country during World War I. During World War I, nearly 35,000 South Australians served in the army ,8.5 per cent of the population and 37.7 per cent of adult men aged 18 to 44 at that time. After the end of the war, more than 5,000 South Australians were not able to return to their homes and the monument was built at the initiative of then South Australian Prime Minister Archibald Pek (Archibald Peake).

National War Memorial, through the design of two scenes of marble relief and bronze statues, shows the beginning and end of the war and the sacrifices made by Australian youth for the country, while inside the monument is a dome shrine that can be entered through the gates of each side, with bronze plates engraved with the names of all the Australian soldiers who died, accompanied by a warning :" their glory will always be remembered, not only in stone, but in the heart ".
