Fannie Bay Gaol

E Point Rd & Ross Smith Ave, Darwin City NT 0820, Australia

Introduction of Fannie Bay Gaol

Fannie Bay Gaol is located in the city of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory.

Fannie Bay Gaol is the longest-used prison in Australia and has been the main prison in Darwin from September 20, 1883 to September 1, 1979. Fannie Bay Gaol was built primarily to carry out the death penalty. Male and female prisoners are held in separate cells. There is also a garden in front of the female prisoners' prison, in which prisoners have to work at leisure. In 1952, the prisoners who carried out their final death sentences were two Romanian immigrants. They were suspected of murdering a taxi driver. Today, the prison is open as a historical attraction, allowing visitors to look at the iron curtain years in person. In addition, there are plenty of historical pictures and data on display.
