Sheffield

Introduction of Sheffield

Sheffield is located at the foot of (Mount Roland), 1234 meters above sea level in northern Tasmania, about 265km from Horbart, the capital of Tasmania, 87 km from (Launceston), the second largest city in Tasmania, and 55 km from (Cradle Mountain), the Cradle Hill, with a resident population of about 1500.

Founded in 1859, Sheffield is a mural town full of literary flavor, in which murals can be seen everywhere. When you walk into the town, you walk into the mural world. The whole town is like a three-dimensional picture book, full of murals, ATM cash machines, record shops, cafes, restaurants, even the abandoned house is dressed up by murals romantic and dreamy. Crazy artists and professional painters make the town almost half blank, so it has the reputation of mural city. Unlike Tazhou, which can enjoy the natural scenery of fertile cattle and sheep herds everywhere, it came to this town to experience a strong and full of charm.

The first mural in the town of Sheffield was born in 1986, when the town of government decided to set up a tourist association to paint the history of the town on the walls of the town because of the depression of the local economic. The story of the pioneer attracted tourists.

Many of the murals in small towns, even impromptu graffiti, are written by famous contemporary master artists. In 2007, Hong Kong singer Eason Chan came here and followed local customs to create a mural. The content shows him walking alone on the cradle mountain of Tazhou, wanting to be alone. Because of his paintings, the town was later popular with Chinese tourists. Over the past decade, the annual award-winning murals displayed in the center of the town have been constantly changing, and only Eason Chen's paintings have been preserved to this day (latest news: Eason's masterpiece has been temporarily put away because of the need to repair it).

In addition to murals, Sheffield is also one of the most important places to produce mellow wine in Tasmania, with wine cellars, food and so on.

Tips:

  • Most of the town's murals are scattered on the exterior walls of different shops.
  • Every year, the town holds the International Wall painting Festival (International Mural Fest), a mural competition that everyone can take part in, starting every Easter Sunday for a week. In these seven days, the artists created their favorite paintings to be selected by the judges, and eventually competed for different awards. The event was held in Mural Park, Sheffield. All the murals will be displayed and retained until the second year of the competition. Everyone can apply online. Www.muralfest.com.au.
