Nhulunbuy is the northernmost port town of (Gove Peninsula), the northernmost end of the northern part of the Northern Territory's mainland, at the northernmost end of the (Arnhem Land) Gofu Peninsula, about 1340 kilometers from Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory.
Arnhem is a traditional aboriginal area in which the Yonggu indigenous people, (Yolngu Aboriginal people), have lived for at least 40, 000 years.

Nhulunbuy is located in remote areas of the Northern Territory. Driving to Nhulunbuy requires an early application to the Northern Territory Government and a drive through (Unsealed Road), more than 700km of unwatered roads, so most supplies and tourists will be transported by air.
