Mareeba is a small town on the Atherton Plateau in northeast Queensland, about 60 kilometers east from the famous tourist city of Cairns.
Mareeba is located at the confluence of (Granite Creek), Granite Creek, Baron River, and (Emerald Creek), Emerald Creek, with an average elevation of 417m.
Before the arrival of European colonists in 1875, the Muluridji aborigines had lived there for tens of thousands of years, and in the Muluridji language, Mareeba meant the convergence of rivers.
