Benalla is a small town in central Victoria, about 210km from Victoria's capital, Melbourne.
Benalla is on the (Broken River) side of the Brocken River, where indigenous people lived long before European colonists arrived in 1824. Europeans have settled here since 1838, and there have been minor clashes with the indigenous people. The town was officially established in 1844 and upgraded to a city in 1965.
