It is well known that Australia is made up of six states and two territories, but do you know how many territories Australia has overseas?

Anyone with a little knowledge of Australia knows that the country consists of eight blocks of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia, as well as the Northern Territory and the Capital Territory. Since the administrative level is equal, why is it that some places are called states and some places are called territories?

The difference between a state and a territory

Australia`s overseas territories also favor the Queen as a monarch.

The predecessor of the Australian states was the colonies under the independent jurisdiction of the British colonial period. In 1901, these colonies were renamed states to join the Union. Under the concept of constitution in Australia, the state is a political entity with sovereignty, and the states merge a part of their sovereignty into the Australian Federation.

In states, all government authority that has not been delivered to the Federation through constitution is exercised independently by the states, so state autonomy is protected by constitution. Australian states and federations wear a monarch, but sovereignty does not belong to each other. The state governor and the federal governor are both direct representatives of the Queen of England. Governor (Premier)., elected by voters in the state by the head of state government

Unlike states, Australian territory is federally owned, and territorial government autonomy is granted by federal government legislation or revoked by federal government through legislation. At present, some of Australia`s territories have a high degree of autonomy, while some are directly under the jurisdiction of federal government agencies. The head of the government in the Northern Territory and the Capital Territory is not the Governor, but the Chief minister (Chief minister).

There is a big difference between state and territorial legislation rights. States can legislation themselves in some areas, while the Federation cannot intervene. Territories can also legislation on their own, but the legislation right of the territory is granted by the Federal government, and the Federation also has the right to abolish the law established by the Territory.

Where are all ten federal territories?

Australia has ten federal territories, (Federal territories), including three native territories and seven overseas island territories.

It is generally considered that Australia has two territories--the Northern Territory and the Capital Territory, but in fact, strictly speaking in Australia, there are three territories in the north, the capital and the Jarvis Bay. Jarvis Bay is a land purchased by the federal government to New South Wales, although nominally an independent territory, but administration and law are attached to the capital`s territory.

The seven overseas territories are Christmas Island, Corcos (Kirin) Islands, Ashmore and Caget Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Norkford Islands, Hurd Island and MacDonald Islands, and the Australian Antarctic Territory.

Christmas Island (Christmas Island) is Australia`s overseas territory in the northeast Indian Ocean, covering an area of 137.4 square kilometers, of which 135 square kilometers are Christmas Island National Park. Christmas Island is about 490 kilometers north of Jakarta and 2605 kilometers southeast of Perth, the capital of West Bank Australia.

According to the 2016 census, Christmas Island has 1843 permanent residents, most of them from Chinese backgrounds and English, but Malay and Cantonese are spoken on the island.

Captain William Minas (William Mynors), an Englishman, discovered the island on Christmas Day in 1643 and named it Christmas Island, which was officially incorporated into England in 1888. Christmas Island was occupied by Japanese troops from 1942 to 1945 and became a dependency of British Singapore since 1946.

In 1957, Australia asked Britain to hand over Christmas Island sovereignty to Australia before Singapore`s autonomy. On October 1, 1958, according to the Christmas Island Act 1958 (Christmas Island Act 1958), Christmas Island was officially transferred to Australia for administration and became Australia`s overseas territory. On October 1, 1958, Christmas Island became the "Land Day (Territory Day)".

Christmas Island is a non-self-governing territory under the direct jurisdiction of the Federal government. The Governor appoints the Administrator to govern the Territory on behalf of Australia and the monarch. Christmas Island belongs to the (Lingiari) District in the Northern Territory during the federal election.

Under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Christmas Island also served as a temporary shelter for asylum seekers.

Norfolk (Norfolk Island) and neighboring Philip Island (Philip Island, are different from Victoria Philip Island) and Nippon Island to form an Australian overseas territory. It covers an area of about 34.6 square kilometers and has a population of 1748.

The population of the island is primarily of British descent, with the remaining Australians, New Zealanders and Polynesian, 80.8 per cent of Australia`s citizen and 16 per cent for New Zealand`s citizen. The local official language is English and the administrative center is Kingston. It`s one of Australia`s most isolated communities, and it`s one of the oldest in Australia`s history.

Norfolk Island is located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, 1676 kilometers southwest of Sydney, Australia, and 640km south of New Zealand. Norfolk Island is fertile and mild in climate and is suitable for farming.

(Cocos (Keeling) Islands) is Australia`s overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, 2936 km northwest of Perth and 1270 km southwest of Jakarta. The archipelago covers an area of 15.6 square kilometers and consists of 27 coral islands. According to the 2016 census, the total population of the Islands is 544.

The archipelago became Australian territory in 1955, merged into Australian territory in 1984 and belongs to Australian Indian Ocean territory since 1995. There is no state-level government in the archipelago, and federal government develops law and provides services for the territory. The Governor appointed a Chief Executive, (Administrator), to perform administrative functions on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport, cities and Local Development minister. In the federal election, this place and Christmas Island belong to the Lin Jiali district.

The archipelago`s economic is mainly produced and exported by coconut kernels, but most food, fuel and consumer goods still depend on imports.
