Australia may receive more than 10,000 fewer permanent residents this year.
According to two major adjustments introduced by the federal government, the number of permanent residents is likely to be reduced by more than 10, 000 this year, probably in remote areas where population growth is urgently needed.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, (ABC), accounts for nearly 30, 000 permanent residence quotas in remote areas and around the world in the Home Office`s plan. But two prominent immigration experts who have worked in the immigration department warned that neither of the two immigration plans could be filled with 20,000 people, which means more than 10,000 quotas will be wasted.
Holligan (John Hourigan), national president of (MIA) at the Australian Immigration Institute, said employers in remote areas, guarantee immigrants, were likely to be the most affected, adding that "there is now a quota of 9000 in this category, and it is lucky to have 2000 people in this category."
He also thinks the global talent program, which has 5,000 quotas, is also "quite risky" and that the final permanent residence visa issued by authorities may be far less than expected.
Cheryl (Henry Sherrell), an immigration researcher, said it was "not easy" to fill 160000 permanent places, given the major changes in immigration policy. "the figure is likely to be between 14 and 150000, meaning it is back to where it was about 15 years ago."
It is reported that permanent residence visas in remote areas will not be officially launched until November. Cheryl believes it will take time to attract applicants, process and issue visas.
He also expects the reduction in permanent tenure quotas to have a huge impact in the long run, noting that "while this may not have an immediate short-term impact on Australia`s actual immigration rate, history tells us that this will play an important role in the long run, because those who are unable to move from temporary to permanent residence will consider leave Australia."
Holligan also predicted that remote areas with scarce populations could be hit and that employers` inability to find anyone to fill important jobs could also spread to local economic.
Immigration minister (David Coleman) announced government`s permanent quota allocation plan in March, saying the total quota would be 160000, and stressed that this year`s focus will be on increasing and emphasizing migrants from remote areas, and identifying highly skilled people through the Global Talent Program.
Government is also said to be able to transfer some of the previous backlogs of applications to new remote areas to keep them away from the city.
Reduce permanent residence and increase temporary residence
Traditionally, the Immigration Department has set permanent quotas as a target for required immigration. But after the Unionparty came to power, the quota plan became the "upper limit."
Australia`s permanent quota for seven years in a row was 190000, but this year it fell to 160000. The actual approved permanent residents fell from about 190000 in fiscal year 2015 to 184000 the following year, and then to 162000.
According to Holligan and Cheryl, the volume in fiscal year 2019 may be only 150000 or less.
While the number of new permanent residents continues to decline, the number of temporary residents driven by the study abroad force is increasing. Between 2018 and 2019, Australia`s net overseas immigrants, including temporary residents, are expected to increase by more than 10, 000 to about 270000. (Enyo)
