After getting the permanent residence of (PR) in Australia for five years, is it still free to enter and leave the country?

Australia's PR is valid for only five years. Five years after you get the Australian PR, will you still be able to leave and leave the country at any time? Permanent Resident, acronym PR, is literally a permanent resident. The permanent residents of Australia are made up of two parts:

  • Right of residence: a person with PR status in Australia may live freely in Australia without restriction;
  • Travel Facility: generally has access to Australia for five years, during which PR holders are free to enter or leave Australia. This is why what is commonly referred to as Australia's PR is only five years effective.

To put it simply, this is a visa for a former permanent resident of Australia (PR), or former Australian citizen who loses / renounces Australian citizenship) who would like to return to Australia after an overseas trip.


155 conditions for visa application

The visa applicant must be a permanent resident of Australia, a former Australian PR, whose visa has not been cancelled or a former Australian citizen who has lost / renounced Australian citizenship, and meets any of the following requirements:

  • In the past five years, holders of legal Australian permanent residence / citizenship have resided in Australia for a cumulative period of two years. Applicants can apply for a 155 visa valid for five years;
  • Having held legal Australian permanent residence / citizenship in Australia for a cumulative period of less than two years during the past five years, a one-year 155 visa may be applied for if the following conditions are met:
  • The applicant provides evidence that there is a close commercial, cultural, job and personal relationship between the applicant and Australia and is beneficial to Australia;
  • If the applicant can prove that he has a close relationship with Australia and is in the interest of Australia, but has not returned to Australia in the past five years, he or she needs to prove that the applicant has a special reason why (Compelling Reason) cannot return to Australia and provide strong evidence;
  • The applicant must be a spouse with a 155 visa or a family member.


157 visas for Australian residents to return to Australia

The visa is established for applicants who do not meet 155 Australian visa requirements for return to Australia. 157 visa is valid for three months.

157 conditions for visa application


  • In the past five years, legal Australian permanent residence / citizenship has been held for at least one day in Australia;
  • In the past five years, legal permanent residence / citizenship has been held in Australia for a cumulative period of less than two years;
  • Applicants need to provide uncontrollable and compassionate reasons for leaving Australia, (Compelling and Compassionate Reason).
