More than 30, 000 voters did not vote in the Melbourne mayoral by-election in May, according to < The Age. Voters who did not participate in the mayoral election, including residents who hold student and job visas, must explain this, or face a fine of A $79.

No matter who is in Australia, those who do not vote will be fined, the news has been confirmed.

At the Melbourne mayoral by-election, the number of registered voters was 144550, but the actual turnout was only 81825, according to Mike Lagastes, a (VEC) spokesman for the Victorian Electoral Commission. As a result, Lagastes told all voters who had not taken part in the vote to explain it in detail for 28 days, or face a fine of A $79.

Voters and homeless people over 70 years of age or living abroad will automatically be exempted.

"A lot of people in Murben, like me, are temporary residents," said Heath Mitchell, a tenant in the city of Murben. "We come and go in a hurry." None of us will be affected by City Hall policy, "says Mitchell." many of the temporary residents in Melbourne are divorced from local politics, which is why a large number of voters have not voted.
