In mid-December 2018, Australia's Northern Territory and Southwest Victoria signed a new agreement with the federal government on migration in remote areas, opening up a new route for Australian employers with basic farms or special skills to emigrate overseas. Temporary skills shortage visa can be used to emigrate to Australia, and is expected to obtain a permanent residence visa.
New remote immigration agreements reduce visa applicants' skills, language and income requirements. However, the government asked applicants to promise to stay in these areas for at least three years before obtaining a permanent residence visa.
Immigration Secretary David Coleman said the government is improving immigration plans to better meet the needs of specific areas.

Under the new remote area immigration agreement, holders of these categories of visas may have the opportunity to obtain permanent residence visas if they meet all temporary residence-to-permanent residence visas.
The Northern Territory government confirmed that the new agreement includes a broader range of occupations, totalling 117, while adjusting English and wage requirements, as well as providing applicants with permanent residency.
Selena Uibo, the Northern Territory's minister of work and training, said all residents would benefit when more people moved to the Northern Territory.
