For Australian students, there are three main ways to apply for Australian immigrants.


First of all, it is necessary to determine whether your major is an Australian immigration major, if you are an Australian immigrant major, and if you have a score of 60 points, you can apply for skilled immigrants directly, and the conditions for applying for skilled immigrants can be seen as 189 independent skilled immigrants. 190 cantonal guarantees for skilled immigrants and 489 skilled migrants from remote areas;

For international students who have not scored enough, or have not completed their career assessment, or because EOI has not received an invitation, they can apply for a temporary visa for their graduates. The first can extend their stay in Australia, and the second can meet the requirements of skilled immigrants by raising their IELTS scores, working, and year of study during the period of holding a temporary visa for 485 graduates. Skilled immigrants can be applied for at any time after they have met the requirements of skilled migration;

Australian students can directly apply for 186 employer-sponsored immigrants and 187 remote areas employers-sponsored migrants if they find an employer. You can also consider applying for a 457 temporary work visa to change to an employer-guaranteed immigration visa after two years working for an employer or to an employer-sponsored immigration visa in 187 remote areas.


This article mainly introduces the second way: graduate temporary visa 485.


485 temporary visas for graduates 

Graduate temporary visa 485 is a short-term visa for graduates who have completed two years of study in Australia but have failed to meet immigration score requirements. The purpose of the visa is to give students enough time to improve their skills to meet immigration requirements. Graduates with a temporary visa for graduates may continue to stay in Australia to find jobs, study, travel, or complete their career year (Professional Year).

There is no score requirement to apply for a 485 graduate temporary visa, but the applicant has to meet some basic conditions. Applicants can only apply for a temporary visa for 485 graduates, and submit the application within half a year after graduation. From visa submission to visa approval, the principal applicant (and deputy application) must be in Australia, and family members are allowed both at home and abroad.

On 23 March 2013, 485graduates' temporary visas replaced the original 485graduates' technical visas, which are now divided into two categories, one of which is the old Graduate Work stream (485 visa). One is that the Post-Study Work stream.Graduate Work stream is the same as the original technology visa for 485graduates; The Post-Study Work stream offers higher-degree graduates more opportunities to work in Australia, changing the category to two, three, or even four-year temporary visas, depending on the degree level.

Note: Post-Study Work stream is only applicable to students who have submitted their Australian study visa applications for the first time after November 5, 2011, such as the submission of a visa on November 1, 2011 and the signing of the visa on November 10, 2011, which do not meet the requirements of the Post-Study Work stream application. Because the date of submission of visa application is before Nov. 5, 2011.


485 conditions for applying for temporary visas for graduates 

  • When the application was submitted, it was under the age of 50;
  • Holding a valid 572573574 student visa or cross-bridge visa;
  • To meet the requirements of English proficiency, the IELTS total score is 6 and the single item is no less than 5 points;
  • Meet the requirements for two academic years in Australia over the past six months;

Note: the course must be a course registered in CRICOS, taught in English for a period of not less than two years / 92 weeks, the actual duration of the course must not be less than 16 natural months, complete in Australia, and hold a student visa during the completion of the course. Language training course does not count;

  • Good health and good conduct (proof of non-crime in Australia is required);
  • Commercial insurance has been purchased;

Note: on 24 March 2013, the Immigration Service added a new clause requiring students applying for a 485 graduate temporary visa to take out adequate commercial insurance (unless they have an Australian medical card) when submitting their visa application. Insurance time must be sufficient to cover your stay in Australia;

  • Meet the special requirements of both categories.


Graduate Work stream Special requirement

  • The nominating profession is on the SOL list;
  • A vocational assessment has been submitted;
  • The evaluation agency certifies that your skills are in line with the nominating profession;

Note that, unlike skilled immigrants, applicants for: Graduate Work stream need a letter of vocational assessment when applying for 485. unlike skilled immigrants, applicants may provide proof of having submitted an application for career assessment when submitting a temporary visa for 485graduates. This certificate must be issued by the applicant's nominating professional evaluation body, and does not need to wait until the vocational assessment is passed, as is the case with the application for skilled immigrants;

  • If the degree applied for a career assessment is obtained in Australia, the course must be registered in the CRICOS;
  • The last six months meet the requirements for two academic years in Australia; 6-degrees, diplomas or qualifications must be highly relevant to the nominating profession.


Post-Study Work stream Special requirement

  • For the first time since November 5, 2011, an Australian student visa has been granted;
  • Bachelor degree, Master's degree or Ph.D.;
  • The university or institution that issues the qualifications must be registered in the CRICOS;
  • The last six months have met the requirements for two academic years in Australia.
