More and more Chinese LGBTIQ people choose to come out to Australia

China legalized homosexuality in 1997, but legal and social pressure made it difficult for men and women to express their sexual orientation.

Erin Chew, founder of the Australian Asian Alliance (Asian Australian Alliance), told SBS News: "it`s easier for them to go abroad and tell their parents the truth via WeChat, because there`s no direct conflict. They don`t have to tell other relatives, so they just tell their parents. "

Lucy Wang, who told the truth to his family at the age of 16, recalled that it was not a pleasant experience.

"my girlfriend and I were dropped out of school and I had to change schools because of her," she told SBS News. "then I was sent to Australia to stay away from her."

Ms. Wang said her family believed she could change her sexual orientation by separating her from her girlfriend, but it actually strengthened her self-confidence.

She said, "I can accept who I am. I can tell my friends or acquaintances who I am and my sexual orientation. And then I have her partner here, too. "

The diversity council of Australia`s GLBTIQ multiculturalism Council, (AGMC), this weekend in Melbourne discussed whether there had been improvements in the equality of people from different cultures and faiths in the LGBTIQ community.

AGMC President Judy Tang says the forum gives people an opportunity to tell their stories.

Ms Tang`s parents are Chinese, and her memories of coming out of the cabinet are still clear.

"maybe my mother didn`t take it this way at first. But for me, only we can keep seeing each other. The more she sees, the more, for example, my girlfriend and I are just doing routine things that will make her (mom) feel no more uncomfortable. "

"so I think I have a good result because my partner and I have taken part in a lot of family activities, and the family welcomes us very much."

Same-sex marriage is illegal in China and people with same-sex relationships are not allowed to adopt children, but for Ms Wang, family members do not accept their children as gay because of the social environment.
