"After an extensive 15-week assessment of central whitef by the engineering firm KBR, the department decided not to reopen the 100-year-old building for public safety reasons," the ministry`s statement read. "
A survey and assessment showed that, despite previous repairs to the wharf, the decay rate of the stumps supporting the wharf is accelerating as a result of the constant attack of rust, sea borers and termites, the ministry said.
Angela Skandarajah, chief executive of the Department of Development of the State of Victoria, said:" Because of the complexity and age of the structure of the whitef, the maintenance work to restore the whitef will be very heavy. ""Even if we invest a lot of money and time in the repair work, these problems will continue to emerge, and the related repair investment will not guarantee the safety of the use of the wharf in the medium and long term. "
The Herald Sun revealed in November that KBR had examined central whitef every two months for the 12 months to August, but failed to find nearly a third of the piles had some form of defect. Around 28 per cent of the piles are believed to have some form of defects and tenants have questioned how they were left out.
Angela Skandarajah also said it would work with heritage departments, communities and stakeholders in the state to find opportunities to rebuild the whitef for safe use.
The tenant on the whitef has been told, and a local tenant, speaker, said the department`s statement was "unbelievable ". She said:" To ensure that the 1,300 employees and other customers who work here have always been the top priority, while the department has failed to maintain central whitef, which poses serious security risks to thousands of people. "
The speaker also said he had asked the department to delay the announcement until the fire had subsided and gave them time to inform employees and customers, but the state department declined. Nevertheless, they will not hold any kind of press conference until the fire has subsided.
