In the official announcement, the Ministry of Education has legally terminated 234 Chinese-foreign cooperative schools and programs with undergraduate degrees and above, and many of the country`s top universities have not been spared: Peking University, Hong Kong University, University of Foreign Trade and Economics, and so on.
Of the 234 terminated projects, 45 involve partnerships with Australian universities, including Australia`s eight most prestigious schools.
In this regard, some speculate: is this related to the tension in Sino-Australian relations?
The answer is no.
Because of this incident, the worst affected were British universities-60 partnerships were terminated, followed by Australia, 45, and the third, the United States, with about 25 universities affected.
And the Chinese side explained this:
1. These Chinese-foreign cooperative school-running projects which were called off did not attract students.
2. The price is too high for most student families to afford
3. Insufficient educational resources and poor quality
4. The cuts are for economic reasons, not for political motives.
That said, the policy will still have a huge impact on Australia`s education industry, one of Australia`s pillar industries.
As of last year, Chinese students accounted for 38% of Australian universities, so once China`s education exports are affected, Australia`s entire education community faces a huge crisis.
Among the eight major Australian universities, five major universities have been shot.
