Speakers have been installed at various locations in Melbourne, the Herald Sun reported. On Thursday, the city tested its emergency alarm system for the first time.

It is understood that speakers have been installed in 65 parts of the city to inform people as soon as possible, leave the scene or evade the scene in the event of a terrorist attack or a car attack like Flinders Street (Flinders St). By the end of 2018, the city will install loudspeakers in 30 other locations.

At 10:45 on Thursday morning, the state library`s (State Library) broadcast a warning signal and test message, reassuring the public that it was just a drill.

The new emergency warning system is understood to be a new measure introduced by the state to address potentially fatal crisis situations. Emergency service agencies may also publish alert information from each location.

The speakers will be used in a variety of emergencies, including terrorist attacks, hijackings, besieges or riots, said state police deputy commissioner Patton (Shane Patton). Through these speakers, agencies will be able to notify people quickly and ensure their safety in times of crisis.

Victoria Police Commissioner Neville (Lisa Neville) said it was a measure that would help protect Victorian residents and Melbourne tourists. While he hopes the alarm systems will never come in handy, he believes that with them, residents` safety will be improved.
