The Painted Desert is located in the remote inland area of northern South Australia, about 1000 km by car from Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, and the nearest town is (Oodnadatta), which is about 80 km by car. It is about 150km by car from the Cuppetti (Coober Pedy), known as the underground city.
The Painted Desert is an ancient inland seabed that has been eroded by Rain Water over a long period of 80 million years, turning its slopes and shapes into colored shale, in dark red, orange, yellow, brown, and dark red, orange, yellow and brown. Colorful colors, such as white, vary with the height of the sun, and are spectacular from a distance, especially at sunrise and sunset.
