Boab Prison Tree is located on the (Derby Hwy) side of the Derby highway on the southern outskirts of Derby, a small coastal town in (Kimberley Region), northern Western Australia, about 5 kilometers from the heart of Derby town.
Boab Prison Tree is one of the symbols of Derby, a huge ancient tree believed to have lived on the land for more than 1500 years. The old tree, 14 metres in circumference and hollow in its interior, opened a door on the side, and, Boab Prison Tree, the site used by early patrol police to walk into Derby as a prisoner, was named for that. Today, this ancient tree becomes a registered Aboriginal site, which is of cultural significance to the local aborigines.
A kiosk beside the breads prison tree, where visitors can learn more about the ancient tree and its historical and cultural background.
Note: be sure to respect the sensitivity of aboriginal culture, not to climb old trees, or too close to ancient trees.
