Katherine is located in the north of the Northern Territory, south of Nitemiluk National Park (Nitmiluk National Park), about 310km north from Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, with a permanent population of about 11000. It is the fourth-largest city in the Northern Territory (the third largest is Darwin's satellite city, Palmerston Palmerston, but it is usually counted as part of Darwin), from Adelaide (Adeliade), the capital of South Australia, across the Australian interior. The famous Gan train (The Ghan) stops at Katherine, and the next stop is Darwin.
Katherine is a stronghold with a view of the (Victoria River) valley of the Victoria River and a home for exploring Australia's inland landscape: six National Parks, more than 10 Nature Parks and protected areas from Katherine. Including the famous 13 canyons made up of the Nietmiluk National Park.
One of Katherine's best-known attractions is the small town of (Cutta Caves Nature Park), Qatar Cave Nature Park, south of the city, where you can drive around the town in a car. You can go to the aboriginal art gallery to find works of art from local and other local artists, and go to the hot springs on the banks of the Katherine River to enjoy a relaxing time. The ponds, large and small, are all pure springs from natural geothermal spas.
