Derby is a small coastal town in (Kimberley Region), northern Western Australia, about 3200 kilometers by car from Perth, the capital of Western Australia, about 1730 kilometres from Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, and about 1730 kilometres from the same Kimberley area. The famous tourist resort of Bloom (Broome) is about 220km by car, close to 5000 permanent residents, more than half of whom are aborigines.
During World War II, Derby was hit by Japanese air strikes because it was used as a base for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAF) (RAAF), and was one of the few regions in Australia that had experienced war. The current Derby economy is mainly supported by mining and tourism.
Bloom (Broome), Derby and Kununara (Kununurra) are the three largest towns in the Kimberley area.
