Charters Towers is located in the interior of northeast Queensland, about 1350 kilometers from Queensland capital Brisbane and about 135km from (Townsville), Queensland's fourth-largest city.
Founded in 1877, when gold mines were discovered around Charters Towers, gold diggers swarmed in and soon formed a prosperous town. With the rapid retreat of the gold rush, the development of small towns gradually fell into a trough. Today's Charters Towers, mining is still a pillar industry, but its rich history and unique customs in inland areas also make tourism flourish here.
