Vue de monde, one of Melbourne`s best-known restaurants, is in trouble.
A former employee and five others said in an interview that if you work there, you will encounter situations where you often work for more than 30 to 40 hours of unpaid work over a week.
Some of these employees have previously worked in the group`s now-closed Cafe Vue. At present, Vue Group denied the matter, saying that some of the staff overtime is "reasonable overtime." They are employed on an annual salary, and the employee agrees to an annual salary rather than an hourly salary.
The employees said they were often asked to work overtime, often more than 50 hours a week, but only 38 to 40 hours.
Alex, a former chef, added that he often worked 80 hours a week, and once worked 101 hours a week, but still earned only 40 hours. He is now a carpenter.
Recently, Karen (alias), just resigned from Vue de Monde. Employees often work unpaid overtime, she says, and they often work 70 hours a week when they`re understaffed. If you complain, the manager will say,`I work longer than you`. "they thought everything would be fine without a customer complaint, but we were exhausted." Darcy Phillips said he was happy to work in such a senior place in 2016, but quit a few months later, often working 60 hours a week. Think about it, the job here in addition to make the resume good-looking, always unpaid overtime is not really worth it.
"there`s no way a restaurant like Vue can`t afford to pay (overtime). Look at the price, look at the profits every month. It`s ridiculous." Victorian Trades Hall Council, Victoria, and Young Workers Centre, a subordinate, are calling on the legislation to convict and sentence intentional withholding and recommend a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Opened in 2009 by renowned chef Shannon Bennett, Vue de monde is located on the 55th floor of Rialto, Melbourne, with an excellent view. The cheapest package here is 230 Australian dollars per person, plus drinks.
Bennett is currently one of the four directors of the Vue Group.
Last year his MasterChef colleague, George Calombaris (, apologized to 162 underpaid employees and repaid A $2.6 million in arrears since 2011.
