New World University rankings: Australian-Australian universities fall on the list

Nine Australian universities are in the top 200 of the latest world university rankings, and the best performers are the University of Melbourne`s (University of Melbourne). (Sydney Morning Herald.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the UK education journal Thames higher Education (Times Higher Education) has released the latest ranking of world universities, with nine universities in Australia entering the top 200, but six of them falling.

Australia has nine universities in the top 200, with the University of Melbourne still doing the same (University of Melbourne), at 32nd, according to the latest ranking of world universities in Thames higher Education. The (University of Sydney) at the University of Sydney climbed to 59th from 61st last time. Sydney University of Science and Technology (University of Technology, Sydney) last ranked above 200, this time rose to 196.

However, Australia`s other six on the list of colleges and universities have declined. Among them, the National University of Australia (Australian National University) dropped one place, ranked 49th, the University of Queensland (University of Queensland) dropped from 65th to 69th, Monash University (Monash University) dropped from 80th to 84th, the University of Queensland dropped from 65th to 69th, the Monash University (Monash University) dropped from 80th to 84th. The (University of NSW) of the University of New South Wales fell from 85th to 96th; the (University of Western Australia) of the University of Western Australia fell from 111to 134th; and the (University of Adelaide) of the University of Adelaide fell one to 135th.

While some Australian universities have improved this year, the overall situation is worrisome, with many falling or stagnating, said Powell (Ellie Bothwell), editor of the global ranking of universities.

It is reported that in 2017, Australia`s government announced that government cut $2.1 billion in education grants to universities, freezing fees paid to universities for two years.

Powell pointed out that cuts in funding will not keep Australian universities and research institutions world-class. Australian universities will face difficulties in the next few years as funding cuts and pressure on universities to limit the number of overseas students, coupled with fierce competition from Asian universities.

It is reported that Oxford University has occupied the first place in the world for the third consecutive year. China`s mainland total of seven universities entered the top 200, among which Tsinghua University jumped eight places, ranked 22nd. Peking University ranked 31st, down 4 places. In addition, China University of Science and Technology ranked 93rd, Zhejiang University 101st, Fudan University 105, Nanjing University 135th, Shanghai Jiaotong University 190th.
