Conservative Senator Bernardi (Cory Bernardi) called on the federal goverment to remove taxes on new car buyers, the Australian newspaper reported. The tax, originally intended to protect Australia`s auto industry, no longer exists.

Bernardy said the federal goverment levies more than A $1 billion a year on new car buyers, and now the tax on imported vehicles is only a measure of goverment`s revenue gains.

It is understood that over the past 10 years, a number of automotive companies have closed down manufacturing plants in Australia, including Mitsubishi (Mitsubishi), Ford (Ford), Toyota (Toyota) and Horton (Holden).

Bernardy pointed out that despite the regrettable end of the car manufacturing industry in Australia, the federal goverment is still imposing tariffs on car buyers, taxing between A $1000 and A $1300 on some of the more popular models, such as the Ford pickup (Ford Ranger), Toyota Hailax (Toyota Hilux) et al. He argues that protecting the car industry, which no longer exists, is groundless and that goverment needs to lighten the burden on Australian car buyers.

Independent Senator Shanofeng (Nick Xenophon) expressed partial support for this. He believes that reducing tariffs can indeed reduce the burden on car buyers, but Australia`s manufacturing industry is at a crossroads of development, and a large portion of the tariff revenue can be used to support advanced manufacturing, research, development and technical training, and so on. This will help create jobs and develop the economy.

Finance Secretary Coleman (Mathias Cormann) said goverment had no plans to revise tax measures. Mr Mosuisse, the finance minister, did not respond to Mr Bernardy`s request.

It is reported that although Australia has signed free trade agreements with South Korea, Japan and China, free of tariffs on vehicles produced by these countries, but Thailand and Europe and other countries are still Australia`s main target of levying car tariffs.

Federal goverment budget documents show that car tariffs in Australia will rise from A $one billion one hundred and nineteen million nine hundred and ninety nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine to A $1.28 billion between the current fiscal year and 2020 / 21.
