North Sydney`s (North Sydney) Street will be completely smoking-free, making it Australia`s first smokeless district council.
North Sydney Mayor Gibson (Jilly Gibson) `s smoking ban was unanimously passed by parliament this week, the Daily Mail reported.
Mayor Gibson said in an interview with the media: "We do not intend to impose fines on violators and this ban will be imposed in a friendly manner. No one should be forced to breathe in secondhand smoke. "
The smoking ban will cover all streets, squares, parks, outdoor restaurants and cafes.
As for e-cigarettes, Mayor Gibson believes they should also be included in the ban, but Congress has not yet studied it.
Mayor Gibson said that if community counselling is expected to be completed by Christmas this year, it is expected that North Sydney`s CBD will become a non-smoking zone from early next year.
Dominique Bergel-Grant, chairman of the North Sydney Chamber of Commerce (North Sydney Chamber of Commerce), said 45,999 workers poured into the area every week, and the chamber welcomed a ban on smoking.
As early as June 2016, Sydney City Council (Sydney Council) announced a permanent ban on smoking in Martin Square (Martin Place) after a 12-month trial. In September of the same year, Pitt Street Shopping Center (Pitt Street Mall) was also listed as a non-smoking area.
In Australia`s federal government budget this year, the tobacco consumption tax was again raised by 12.5%. At present, Australian cigarettes cost nearly 40 Australian dollars per pack, the most expensive country in the world.
