In a visit to Malaysia on June 1, former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar criticized Australia`s government for complicity with former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib and tolerating Najib government corruption. Anwar also called on Australia`s government to extradite to Malaysia a former police officer involved in the death of a woman in Mongolia and the Najib corruption scandal.
The powerful leader of the Malaysian people`s Justice Party, Anwar, declared Australia to be an "accomplice" in the abuse of power by the former National Front government corruption. He called on Australia to return Australia`s former Malaysian special police officer Cyru, who had been sentenced to death in the death sentence of Mongolian girl Atantoya, for a new trial, or he would be seen as an accomplice in harbouring criminals.
Australian Foreign Minister Bi Xiaopu stressed that Australia has never intervened in other countries` sovereignty. She said Australia had established positive and broad ties with Naji government in the past in order to co-operate on matters of interest to both countries. She said Australia now also wants to develop a "close and constructive relationship" with Malaysia`s new government.
In a recent interview with the Australian broadcaster (ABC), Anwar said Australia used to make "very supportive" comments about Naji government, which has become a stain on Australia`s government foreign policy.
