Australia`s key bacterial resistance warning system, (CARAlert), was set up by the Australian Health Care Safety and quality Council in March 2016 and funded by the Australian Federal Ministry of Health, AJP reported.

Within a year, CARAlert`s 73 laboratories have discovered and released 1064 highly resistant bacteria. Caralert collected information about drug-resistant bacteria and conducted research to provide information for states and territories across Australia to help cure infected people.

Research shows that 37 percent of key drug-resistant bacterial samples come from patients in the community. The most common form of CARs after December 2016 is a gonorrhea-causing bacterium. The Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N.gonorrhoeae) antibiotic, azithromycin, accounted for 62 percent of CARs reported to CARAlert in March, up from 67 percent in February.

In 2016, the number of N.gonorrhoeae infections in South Australia surged, with the number of New and Western Australia tripling over the same period. Caralert`s recent report showed that the bacterium not only resists other azithromycin, antibiotics, but also has no effect on it. The chances of sexual transmission are very high. CarAlert collaborates with states and territories to continuously observe the condition of drug-resistant strains and remind the general public and medical institutions to find solutions.
