A joint anti-terrorism unit of the state police launched an operation Friday to arrest a man near a church in North Melbourne.

Witnesses reported that just after 2 p. M., witnesses had seen live-armed police officers in (Leveson Street) and Queensbury Street, according to the Times.

The police later issued a statement confirming the action, noting that "Melbourne`s Joint Anti-Terrorism Unit confirmed that it had carried out its mission in North Melbourne." the police also stressed that there was no imminent attack on the threat in the community.

Witnesses saw a man being held by police on the ground of the Episcopal Church of St. Mary on the corner of (Howard Street) on Lakunsbury and Howard Street. The area was soon reopened to the public.

A backpacker across the church street said the man who saw police arrest was dressed in white and looked like a chemical-proof suit.

Workers working in the neighborhood said the church appeared to be a priority for police, hearing helicopters hovering over it, the area closed for a time, and police everywhere.

Later, anti-terrorism police targeted an apartment in (Bedford Street), Beford Street, near Pierce Street (Peel Street). It is here that the man believed to have been arrested outside the church.

One of the residents, who declined to be named, said it was "too frightening."
