How much do you deserve?

In addition to the minimum wage, there are many factors that affect how much you earn.

If you're on a night shift, or on weekends, public holidays, overtime, extra overtime (or punitive rate, penalty rates) means you'll earn more. Visit the Fair work Commission's (Fair Work Ombudsman) website for more information about overtime pay.

And (modern awards), a modern industry-specific labor ruling agreement, also means you get more pay. For more information, please refer to the Fair work Commission's website on labor adjudication agreements.

As a temporary worker, you get a 25% temporary pay (casual loading), which means your hourly salary should be 25% higher than your usual hourly rate.

This is a compromise, because as a temporary worker, you are not entitled to benefits such as annual leave or long service leave (long-service leave).

According to the regulations, overtime on weekends and public holidays is available with. (SBS pictures of overtime pay.)

Using the online payroll Calculator (Pay Calculator)

If you feel your salary is wrong, or you want to reconfirm it, a fair work commission calculator can help you.

You can open the Fair work Commission's online payroll calculator and answer questions to find out what minimum wage you are entitled to.

International students and backpackers are grossly underpaid

International students and backpackers are often underpaid when they work.

Berger (Laurie Berg) is a senior lecturer at (UTS) Law School, Sydney University of Science and Technology. Last year, she and a colleague conducted a survey of employers withholding wages.

They found that underpay was widespread among international students of all nationalities and backpackers in a variety of industries, nationalities and backpackers. "1/3 of international students earn about half of the minimum wage, and it is illegal for a significant number of students to actually be forced to work." She told SBS.

Many industries are underpaid, hotel services, fruit and vegetable picking industry bear the brunt.

"employees from China, Taiwan, Vietnam and other Asian countries are paid less than those from North America, Ireland and the United Kingdom." "having said that, what really shocked us was that backpackers and international students from major countries in this country (Australia) have suffered from severe underpay," she said. At least 1/5 of Americans, Britain, India, Brazil and China earn about half of the minimum wage. "
