The National facial recognition Database system will be Australia`s latest weapon against terrorism, identity theft and serious crime, the Daily Mail reported.

Within months, drivers` license information for millions of Australian drivers will be uploaded to the Home Office`s new biometric database, (Department of Home Affairs). Within 18 months, every driver`s license in Australia is expected to be linked to the database. The database can record a total of 30 million documents, including guns licenses, fishing permits and adult age cards, in addition to driver`s licenses.

The database is designed to provide national and state law enforcement agencies with new tools to combat crime, including terrorism, identity theft and serious crime.

Police personnel are currently being trained to use the driver`s license face recognition system, (Driver Licence Facial Recognition Solution).

When dealing with serious crimes, the police can use the database to compare images of suspects captured by surveillance or other sources, which will provide up to 20 qualified personnel information. The police can identify the most suspicious persons.

In addition, the establishment of the data will also help prevent serious outbreaks of disease. Health agencies can ask the police for help in tracking people who come into contact with people with a disease.

Although states and territories agreed to the identity matching service last year, new federal government regulations have yet to be passed in parliament. Some free citizen groups have raised concerns about privacy and loopholes in biometric technology.

About half of Australians have some form of facial information stored in the country`s database, according to Michael (Katina Michael), a technology and legal expert. With the entry of driver`s license information, the proportion will increase to 80%.
