According to 9News, the church`s state body has agreed to adopt the new statement, allowing same-sex couples to marry in the United Church of Australia.

According to 9News, the church`s state body has agreed to adopt the new statement, allowing same-sex couples to marry in the United Church of Australia.

After the church`s decision in southeastern Melbourne last night, the church will have two equal but different views on marriage to show the "diversity of Christian beliefs" of its members.

At a seven-day triennial meeting at Box Hill City Hall, members of the church`s national decision-making body agreed to adopt a second statement.

The new additional statement reads: "Christian marriages are free to live together in public and in the presence of God with consent and commitment."

Under the new regulations, pastors will be allowed or denied same-sex marriage.

The existing statement of faith states: "A Christian marriage is a man and a woman who freely agree and promise to live together in public and in the presence of God."

United Church President Deidre Palmer said the decision was made after years of thought and prayer. At the same time, we are grateful to the members of the church for their efforts on behalf of many believers.

"I know this conversation is painful and difficult for you," Dr. Palmer said, addressing the problems of members of the LGBTIQ Church.

"We are also grateful to those who, for whatever reason, are unable to support this change, as well as for your suffering and difficulties in this field."

"rest assured that your right to follow your marital beliefs will be respected and protected," Dr. Palmer said.

"I thank all of you for building a loving Christian community, and despite our own opinions, we are United and caring for each other."

Same-sex weddings are expected to begin in church in the coming months.
