A deadly eight-car crash near Campbelltown on Friday night left a teenager dead and six taken to hospital.

At about 07:15 on Friday night, eight cars collided on Campbelltown Road, near Payten Drive, in the Woodbine district. Two of the cars caught fire after the crash.

A spokeswoman for the New State Police Department said on Saturday that the police were not sure what caused the tragedy of a series of car collisions, which resulted in several serious injuries and had to be taken to the hospital by helicopter. The spokeswoman said, "the investigation has just begun and has not yet reached a conclusion."

An 18-year-old was killed in a car accident while driving a Kia Sportage,.

The driver was a 57-year-old man and three other passengers-two young men, aged 19 and 20, and 18 women-were also seriously injured.

All four spent the night in the hospital and underwent surgery. They were seriously injured on Saturday morning but in stable condition.

Another car involved in a car crash was a blue Commodore, that caught fire in a crash. The driver, a 26-year-old man from Mount Annan, was rescued by good-natured witnesses from the burning sun.

Police say he was operated on Friday night at Liverpool Hospital because of "internal injuries."

A female passenger of another car was also seriously injured.

Drivers and passengers of other vehicles were evaluated at the scene and taken to hospital for further medical examination. But police do not think they were seriously injured.

A police spokesman said it was expected to take some time due to the complexity of the investigation.

Police are urging anyone with details of the accident to contact the crime hotline (Crime Stoppers) at 1800 333,000.
